What is a suspended ceiling?

A suspended ceiling, also known as a dropped ceiling or false ceiling is essentially a second ceiling. Usually comprised of ceiling tiles and a meal framework, suspended ceilings in the UK feature a gap of between three to eight inches from the underside of the structural ceiling above it. The primary functions of suspended ceilings are to conceal any necessary wires, heating, and ventilation systems, whilst providing a seamless and uniform appearance.

Suspended ceilings can commonly be found in:

  • Offices
  • Hospitals
  • Educational Settings
  • Commercial & Retail Units
  • Industrial Units
  • Hotels & Leisure

What types of suspended ceilings are there?

The range of ceilings and ceiling tiles available in today’s market is hugely varied. We work with a range of types of suspended ceilings including…

Mineral Fibre Ceilings

Mineral fibre ceiling tiles are generally installed into an exposed T-Grid system. Economic, ease of installation and access to ceiling void for maintenance purposes.

Metal Ceilings

A wide variety of systems and modular sizes are available. Metal ceiling tiles can be installed into T-Grid as mineral fibre systems but also bespoke varying module ceiling panel sizes with concealed suspension systems.

Plasterboard Ceilings

Plasterboard ceilings are generally installed flat with either a jointed or skim coat finish and decorated to any colour. Plasterboard ceilings can be designed to your specific requirements either flat, curved or rafted.

Perimeter Bulkheads/Margins

Perimeter bulkheads and margins can be installed where a full tile layout is required at junctions of change in the level of ceilings and junctions of external windows to form blind boxes or recessed curtain tracks.

Curved Ceilings

Curved ceilings are installed using plasterboard and GRG board and left with a flat surface for a decorated finish.

Rafted Ceilings

Rafted ceilings can be installed to create a feature in board rooms, executive offices and reception areas.

What are the benefits of suspended ceilings?

We have seen our clients enjoy the benefits of suspended ceilings in the UK and suspended ceiling supplies first-hand. Here are some of the advantages of suspended ceilings…

  • Clean, professional finish
Suspended ceilings work to maintain a clean and professional environment by disguising necessary wires, heating, and ventilation systems. Additionally, suspended ceilings also allow for the installation of light fittings, CCTV, smoke detectors and more.
  • Improved acoustics
Suspended ceilings are effective in acting as a sound barrier between floors. This is a great benefit for businesses with lots of footfall and/or communication as well as providing greater levels of privacy. You can also opt for sound-absorbing tiles!
  • Better insulation
Suspended ceilings are a fantastic way to enhance the thermal insulation properties of premises. As the overall ceiling height of a room will be reduced, this means that hot air can be ‘trapped’ within a room and won’t be released into the ceiling.
  • Improved quality of light
Suspended ceilings can return up to 90% of the light back into a space, compared to around 75% for standard ceilings. This is a great benefit for offices in particular as better lighting can reduce eye strain, fatigue and headaches.
